This month, as we are headed into Fall, I am considering health; my health, your health, and the health of our community. Many of us come to train because of the incredible physical benefits of martial arts. We train our bodies to be strong and flexible, but health is more than just how well our bodies can move. Health encompasses your body, your emotions, your mind and your spirit. Many people are surprised to discover how training is healthy for all areas of our self if we allow the healing, the conditioning and the growth to happen.
I was talking to Mas Guru Agung Janesa about how training calms my emotions and lifts my spirit. I always feel better emotionally after training. She said that through training we can arrive at "...achievement of perfect health and tranquility by way of movement, continuous and precise...in essence, active meditation." I know many students have told me about their experience of feeling so good after training. Often, when it is hardest to convince yourself to come train, is the time that you need it the most for your highest whole health.
Another part of One With Heart that is good for all of our health is the community that we have here. We all come together and train hard, and through training we make friendships and build a community that unites us. Mr. Rogers said, “If you could only sense how important you are to the lives of those you meet; how important you can be to the people you may never even dream of. There is something of yourself that you leave at every meeting with another person.” You each matter to me and I am made better and healthier every time we come together.
I couldn't complete this blog about health without talking about how it is the season when colds, flu and covid start to move in our communities. After all, I have been a nurse for 18 years. We take care of ourselves and each other during this time by taking a few precautions. Wash your hands before and after training, eating, or using the restroom. If you feel like you might be coming down with a cold, stay home and focus on resting and returning to total health. We will be here when you have healed. Since some of the illnesses can be very dangerous to the health of our more vulnerable community members, please stay home for five days if you have upper respiratory symptoms and even after you are better, wear a mask for 10 days after your first symptoms appeared, especially if you have a lingering cough. We have masks at the front desk for you to use and your instructor may ask you to put on a mask if you have a cough during training.
Focus on Health, Stay Healthy, Become Healthier!
