Beyond the Physical: Finding Your Tribe on the Mat

My decade of Pukulan Kuntao Silat training has yielded unexpected and profound benefits, far beyond the initial draw of physical fitness.  Moving on the ground and leaping in the air certainly awakened muscles I never knew were sleeping! I’m stronger and more agile than ever before; my body feels more capable and alive. But what I’ve learned over the last decade of training is that the growth beyond the physical has been the most transformative.

Martial arts has helped me become more mindful and to appreciate the present. When you’re in a tough fight or tired from a long training session, you have to be present. That mindfulness actually gives me the energy to push through. And in life outside of training, it has given me the gift of appreciating moments instead of always looking to what’s next.

And yes, let's not forget the practical self-defense skills. While we all hope to never need them, knowing I have the tools and confidence to protect myself is an empowering feeling. I approach challenges with a calmer, more strategic mindset. The techniques I’ve learned aren't just about offense; they're about awareness, de-escalation, and setting healthy boundaries.

But here's the thing, the reason that surprised me the most and has become the most cherished aspect of my training: the community and unwavering support.

When I was first training, I remember looking into the room of students the next couple of ranks up and thinking, “wow, I want to do that!”. What I didn’t know is that those folx would become like a family and we’d all be supporting each other on the mat and off the mat. I quickly discovered we shared a passion and genuine desire to see everyone thrive. We are each others’ cheerleaders, offering encouragement and support when one of us is struggling, and celebrating victories.

One With Heart isn't just a place to learn how to throw a punch – although we love to hit pads and we hit hard! – it's a place to forge bonds with individuals from all walks of life, united by a common belief in community. The camaraderie, mentorship, and a sense of belonging extends far beyond the training floor. Ultimately, while the kicks and strikes are important, the support and the incredible community I’ve found along the way might just be the most powerful and unexpected gift of my Pukulan Kuntao Silat experience.

Gotong royong,
